PhyCon: Discovering Physical Connectivity for Indoor WLAN Using Mobility
نویسندگان
چکیده
The concept of connectivity in wireless networks is a well-established term referring to the ability of nodes to communicate with other nodes directly or through other nodes working as relays. In this paper, a different aspect of connectivity is presented named physical connectivity, which we defined as the ability of nodes to physically reach other nodes, not only through open spaces, but also through corridors, doors, rooms, etc. For indoor wireless local area networks (WLANs), we believe that awareness of physical connectivity is a key factor for developing emerging applications such as guiding, localization, tracking, physical routing, etc. Related studies only consider the problem of direct connectivity or line-of-sight (LOS), however, we consider physical connectivity should span beyond LOS conditions enabling nodes to reach other nodes through any path available. In this paper a novel method to discover physical connectivity named PhyCon is presented. PhyCon combines node mobility and the inverse-square relationship between received signal strength and distance to discover physical connectivity paths among wireless users. Results from simulations and testbed experiments show PhyCon can discover a high percentage of physical connectivity paths using normal mobility behavior of users found in indoor WLAN.

PRIMAL: Page Rank-Based Indoor Mapping and Localization Using Gene-Sequenced Unlabeled WLAN Received Signal Strength
Due to the wide deployment of wireless local area networks (WLAN), received signal strength (RSS)-based indoor WLAN localization has attracted considerable attention in both academia and industry. In this paper, we propose a novel page rank-based indoor mapping and localization (PRIMAL) by using the gene-sequenced unlabeled WLAN RSS for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Specifically...

Wireless LANs hold the promise of increasing employee productivity by providing them ubiquitous connectivity and mobility across enterprise. It is now a trend to develop the WLAN in various colleges and office campuses for increasing productivity and quality of goods. There are many obstacles when deploying WLAN, which demands seamless indoor handover. The objective of the work reported here is...
متن کاملStochastic Analysis of Variation in Disruption with Changing Traffic Patterns in IEEE 802.11-Based Networks
The idea of using indoor WLAN Access Points from vehicles has been explored in various previous works. Since WLANs are not inherently designed to support high mobility applications, they introduce frequent disruptions in the network services when used in vehicular environments. The objective of this paper is to investigate whether the vehicular traffic patterns affect this undesired disruption ...
متن کاملData download on the move in visible light communications:design and analysis
In visible light communication (VLC), light emitting diodes (LEDs) are used as transmitters; the air is the transmission medium and the photodiodes are used for receivers. This is often referred to as light fidelity (Li-Fi). In this thesis, we provide the methodology to evaluate the performance of VLC hotspot networks in the context of data downloading on the move scenarios by using throughput-...
متن کاملDeriving Connectivity and Application Usage Patterns From Longitudinal Mobile Phone Usage Data
In this paper, based on the Mobile Data Challenge data obtained from the Lausanne data collection campaign, our research aims first to derive network connectivity (e.g., WLAN, 3G) and its Quality of Service (QoS) and mobility patterns of the mobile users, as this connectivity and QoS relate to the user's application activity. Second, we aim to understand how these patterns relate to the overall...
